As part of the Rochester Community Schools $77,000,000, 10-year sinking fund, PEA Group provided landscape architecture services for Rochester Adams High School. The landscape architect services included the design of three existing interior courtyards to be utilized by students.
The existing courtyards on the campus were overgrown and unused other than the occasional science experiment. Due to the location of the site, the existing courtyards had issues with both standing water and poor drainage. The design solution needed to include a low maintenance, usable space. Various types of paving, rock, and artificial turf were selected to provide color, texture, and visual interest to the space. Artificial turf was selected as it does not require water, sunlight, or regular maintenance, adding a low maintenance option for a hangout space. Low maintenance planting beds were also utilized to soften the space, and durable site furniture was selected to withstand heavy use.
