Connecting People with Places: Downriver Linked Greenways

2 min read

A celebratory ribbon cutting was held for the Downriver Linked Greenways gateway features on June 27th in Flat Rock, Michigan at Huroc Park. PEA Group has been working with Downriver Linked Greenways and Friends of the Detroit River for three years, providing site analysis, surveying, stakeholder input, conceptual design, and design development, construction drawings, and construction administration.

PEA Group Senior Project Manager, Mike Franklin, PLA, LEED AP, states “the Downriver Linked Greenways organization has been making strides to develop this greenway system, positively impacting numerous communities over the last 24 years. It has been exciting to be a part of this project which is helping to bring more attention to the Downriver Linked Greenways trail system. It was an honor to design and assist in the construction and installation of these gateways which ultimately help establish the start and end of the greenway and create a space that is accessible for all. These bookends create something which is unique only to the Downriver Linked Greenways.”

A collaborative effort, this project included substantial community involvement including numerous meetings with stakeholders, members of the Flat Rock and Detroit communities, nonprofits, partners, and additional key individuals. Through this effort, our team designed the gateways to reflect the aesthetic of both Detroit and Flat Rock while also reflecting a unified greenway system. During construction, our team worked closely with Liparoto Construction, Disenos Ornamental Iron, and Signarama Allen Park to create two uniquely designed structures that capture the character of the greenway.

This project is just the start to make this greenway a recognizable landmark. PEA Group will continue to work with Downriver Linked Greenways, on other improvements and additions in the near future including signage, crosswalks, bike fix-it stations, benches, and more! Mike states “these are all improvements made for the good and benefit of the community.”

The Downriver Linked Greenways is transforming the Downriver region into a healthier community with people-powered transportation opportunities and recreation by creating a network of trails and green spaces as well as economic development that connect people with places along the greenway.
