Hoskins Drain Improvement Project: Stormwater Education Outreach Program
Alycia Soule and Emily Short from our Lansing office led a stormwater education outreach program for a local elementary school as part of the Hoskins Drain Improvement project, a current PEA Group project with the Ingham County Drain Commissioner (ICDC).
A portion of the drain is located on Bennett Woods Elementary property and will include special features to allow for safe passage of aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife. Students learned about stormwater, the critters than can live in storm drains, and the Hoskins Drain’s “critter crossing culvert.” The program also introduced students to Blanding’s and Eastern Box Turtles, the threats these species face, and ways infrastructure and conservation efforts can help protect them.
The event also supported the Ingham County MS4 Program, another PEA Group Project, by helping ICDC fulfill public education and outreach requirements under its MS4 permit. Approximately 300 first through third grade students participated, making for a fun and educational day all around.
