PEA Appoints Five New Shareholders

PEA, Inc. is proud to announce that it has expanded its ownership team with the addition of five new shareholders. PEA has been a privately held majority family-owned business since 1947. In recent years, the family ownership was transitioned to two majority owners, James Butler, PE, President and David Hunter, PE, PS, LEED AP, Executive Vice President.

In order to meet company growth initiatives, the majority owners have enlisted five new owners. Joining James and David as owners are:

  • Todd Shelly, PS, Director of Land Surveying
  • Kevin Staley, PE, Director of Brighton Engineering
  • Steven Sorensen, PE, Director of Troy Engineering
  • Jeffrey Smith, PLA, LEED AP, Director of Landscape Architecture
  • Daniel Stys, PE, Director of Marketing and Business Development

Todd Shelly has nearly 30 years of surveying experience in Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes Region. He is a 1994 graduate of Ferris State University with a degree in Survey Engineering. As Director of Land Surveying, Todd is committed to exceeding the client’s expectations through the implementation of sound business practices I project management, evolving technology, staff professional development and quality assurance policies and procedures. Todd is involved in many aspects of due diligence and development process for Land Development, Energy Generation, and Communication and Infrastructure Improvement projects. Todd acts as Project Manager while managing company-wide survey operations.

Kevin Staley is the Director of Brighton Engineering as well as the Director of Technology. He is a 1993 graduate of Michigan Technological University with a degree in Civil Engineering and has been a licensed engineer since 1997. Kevin has over 23 years of experience working on a wide range of projects involving site-civil engineering, roadway design, residential developments, energy infrastructure and pavement restoration. As Director of Brighton Engineering for PEA, Kevin is responsible for resource utilization and planning, quality control, staff training, and development and strategic planning for the Brighton Engineering Group. Kevin is also responsible for managing PEA’s computer systems, mobile devices and other technologies.

Steve Sorensen is the Director of Troy Engineering. He is a 1997 graduate of Michigan Technological University with a degree in Civil Engineering and has been a licensed engineer since 2001. He has nearly 20 years of professional engineering experience, providing land development solutions to clients in the higher education, healthcare, office I campus and industrial markets. Steve brings a unique perspective to the team as a result of his experience on the developers’ side of the project. His experience as Director of Engineering for a prominent developer gives him a deeper understanding of the needs and issues with developers, allowing PEA to tailor our services to serve them. As Director of Troy Engineering for PEA, Steve is responsible for resource utilization and planning, quality control, staff training and development, and strategic planning for the Troy Engineering Group.

Jeff Smith is the Director of Landscape Architecture. He is a 1997 graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Landscape Architecture and is registered in Michigan, Ohio, Kansas and Kentucky. Jeff is an award-winning, LEED accredited landscape architect — an expert in sustainable site design. Over the last 20 years he has completed prominent works of design on a wide array of projects including regional trails, healthcare facilities, office I campus property, senior housing and retail I mixed use developments. His talent for creative problem-solving and innovative design along with his commitment to a more sustainable future, earned PEA the distinguished honor of being named the 2009 “Landscape Architecture Firm of the Year” by the Michigan Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (MiASLA). Jeff joined PEA in 2002 and is responsible for managing the Brighton office and overseeing the office and administration operations of the company.

Dan Stys is the Director of Marketing and Business Development. He is a 1996 graduate of The University of Michigan with a degree in Civil Engineering. Dan has been with PEA for over 15 years, performing engineering, project management, marketing and business development activities. Recently, his focus has shifted from engineering and project management to business administration, corporate strategy and business development. His background of business ownership lends him the experience to plan marketing and business activities for the organization. Dan continues to practice engineering and project management for PEA’s pavement services group on select projects.

The new shareholders have the responsibility of meeting corporate growth objectives and maintaining the responsive service and exceptional quality that PEA is known to provide. PEA is poised to maintain its position as one of the leaders in private land development consulting well into the future.
