Spotlight on David Nepper: Driving Innovation in Utilities and Energy

3 min read

With over two decades of experience, David Nepper has shaped his career by adapting to new challenges and seizing opportunities in the utilities and energy sector. Ahead of his attendance at the RE+ Conference, which focuses on renewable energy innovations, we caught up with David to learn more about his journey, insights, and vision for PEA Group’s future in this evolving market.

From Land Development to Utilities and Energy: A Journey

Reflecting on his career beginnings, David shares, “I started about 20 years ago in residential and commercial land development. When that market slowed around 2006-2007, we began looking for other areas to grow into, and energy stood out. I was drawn to this field because of its essential role in our economy and society—energy is truly the lifeblood of our world, and I’m grateful to contribute to solutions in this space.” David’s journey from traditional land development into energy has not only expanded his expertise but also fueled a deep passion for both renewable and traditional energy projects.

What Sets Us Apart in the Utilities and Energy Market

When asked about what differentiates PEA Group from others in the industry, David emphasizes the team’s commitment to client success. “Our passion and dedication to our clients make all the difference. We’re a cohesive unit, ready to tackle any challenge that a project or client may bring to us.” This collaborative approach allows the team to work efficiently across various disciplines, bringing a unique depth to each project.

Challenges Facing the Energy Sector

The utilities and energy sector is not without its challenges. David identifies two major obstacles: staffing shortages and shifting policies. “Staffing is a considerable issue—across the broader energy procurement and construction industries,” he explains. “Another ongoing challenge is navigating the constantly changing policies that impact developers and utilities. Staying adaptable is essential as we continue to meet our clients’ needs.”

Harnessing Technology for Project Advancement

David highlights advancements in technology that are reshaping project development in the utilities and energy sector, particularly LiDAR and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR). “The improvements in these technologies are significant—they reduce costs and increase efficiencies by helping us accurately map both above and below ground features, which supports engineering and design phases,” he says. He’s also watching developments in artificial intelligence with interest, though he admits a degree of caution. “AI is an area I’m both curious and a bit skeptical about. It could potentially reshape our work, but time will tell.”

Vision for Growth in Utilities and Energy

Looking to the future, David envisions continuous growth for PEA Group’s utilities and energy division. Currently, the team provides a wide range of services, including land surveying, geotechnical engineering, ecological consulting, and subsurface utility mapping. “My goal is to integrate every service PEA Group offers into the utilities and energy space,” he says. “With the team we have and our shared commitment, I’m confident we can achieve that vision.”

David’s forward-looking approach and dedication to client-focused solutions set a strong foundation for the growth and development of PEA Group’s utilities and energy division. We’re excited to see where his leadership and expertise will take us in this dynamic field.
