General Motors Active Safety Test Area North

Milford, Michigan

PEA Group was contracted to provide engineering services to assist in the reconstruction of the Vehicle Dynamics Test Area (VDTA) at the Milford Proving Grounds.

The former City Course pad was pulverized and reconstructed for use by the Active Safety Testing User Group at General Motors Milford Proving Ground. Our team designed the new track, which is now called Active Safety Test Area (ASTA) North, to consist of a 12.5-acre pad and a clothoid run-up road that features three lanes of different radius curves to test lane assist features on new vehicles. The east side of the track features areas with and without fog lines and a gravel shoulder for testing. Other areas of the track will receive additional pavement markings in the future to test self-parking and autonomous intersection maneuvering.

This project also included the construction of the new City Course, which was relocated to the Serpentine Course area  Additional pavement was added, as well as a third lane on the east half of the Military Straightaway.

This was the first phase of a three-year plan for the reconstruction of the entire VDTA (Vehicle Dynamics Testing Area). In 2020, PEA Group began reconstructing the North Loop and adding a new entrance to VDTA with a ConSpan Bridge.
