McClaren Proton Therapy Center Courtyard Garden

Flint, Michigan

This world-class Cancer Center provides proton beam therapy, which is the first of its kind in the State of Michigan and the only center in the world to use this specific technology to treat tumors.

PEA Group designed a courtyard healing garden located inside the heart of the building that serves as a visual focal point from the main hallways and provides comforting views from the main waiting room. The healing garden helps to improve the patient experience, reduce patient and employee stress, and provides a positive distraction for patients. This award-winning interior courtyard space typifies the landscape design effort.

PEA Group was involved with the project from the survey phase. Our team designed the site, coordinated complex utility issues, and provided survey staking of caissons to support the 50-foot deep, 6-foot wide concrete walls in the treatment rooms We also prepared geotechnical investigation for soil testing.

In addition to the technical components of the site, PEA Group led the effort to enhance the visual quality of the site. We designed lush landscape features to soften the exterior walls of the imposing vaults that housed the synchrotron equipment.
