Michigan Technological University (MTU) has successfully developed a state-of-the-art medical research facility in the heart of its campus in Houghton, Michigan. The new facility, which shares a wall with the existing Chemical Sciences and Engineering building, presented unique site challenges. In collaboration with HED, PEA Group provided civil engineering services for site improvements, including additional parking areas and upgraded hardscape and landscape features.
The site’s steep hillside location and proximity to neighboring buildings required careful planning and execution. Our team navigated existing campus infrastructure, including an 8-foot steam tunnel running beneath the basement of the new H-STEM building. Additionally, we relocated a water and sanitary main to accommodate the new construction.
The region’s harsh northern climate also played a significant role in the design. To prevent freezing, water and sanitary piping were buried at least 8 feet deep, and where this was not feasible, insulation was installed over the trench. Given the challenges posed by ice and snow, new walkways were designed with sub-pavement heating to ensure safe and accessible pathways throughout the year.
With these strategic improvements, the new facility is now fully operational, providing cutting-edge research space while enhancing the surrounding campus infrastructure.
