Rouge River Kayak Launch Projects: Melvindale and Venoy-Dorsey

Wayne County, Michigan

PEA Group has worked on two kayak launch projects along the Rouge River – Melvindale and Venoy-Dorsey Park. Our team investigated the waterway for the Melvindale project to determine the optimum location for the kayak launch and methods for wayfinding, rest areas, and points of interest. PEA Group developed a report that defined mile marker locations and emergency signage and identified points of interest. Our team also developed concepts and cost opinions for the new kayak launch location that included amenities such as picnic areas, parking, and kayak storage. The project report was used to generate additional funding to implement the improvements. This project was completed in 2020.

Our team is currently working on the Venoy-Dorsey kayak launches as part of the Venoy-Dorsey Park Master Plan. PEA Group performed the early site analysis, including wetland, topographical, and stream surveys, floodplain reviews, geotechnical analysis, and soil borings of the site. As part of the EGLE permit assistance process, PEA Group developed design revisions to minimize stream channel impact and reduce long-term erosion. Additionally, PEA Group prepared the demolition plans to be performed separately from the overall construction to meet EGLE requirements and avoid disturbance to the protected Indiana bat. The project is funded through a Michigan Natural Resources Trust Grant, and construction is planned for 2024.
