StarPlus Energy Battery Manufacturing Plant

Kokomo, Indiana

PEA Group was contracted to provide civil engineering and land surveying services for the new StarPlus Energy Battery Manufacturing Plant in Kokomo, Indiana, a joint venture between automotive OEM Stellantis and battery manufacturer Samsung SDI. This is the joint venture’s first battery manufacturing facility, which will span approximately 3.2 million square feet on roughly 300 acres. This facility will support Stellantis’ strategy to provide its customers freedom of
choice, including electric powertrain options.

The project encountered challenges, including concerns about the 100-year storm discharge capacity due to the existing conditions of the stormwater outlet downstream of the site and the fast-tracked nature of the design/build project. To address these issues, PEA Group developed a dynamic stormwater routing model to simulate the on-site system’s reaction to downstream constraints. Additionally, they worked closely with the design team, design/build partners, and the construction team to keep the project on schedule and ensure construction could continue while the design was being finalized.

The facility began operations in early December 2024 and will supply battery modules for a range of vehicles assembled at Stellantis North America facilities.
